Computer Q&A Board  /  Questions  /  Microsoft Office Word 2003 takes forever to open!

I am using Microsoft Office Word 2003
Windows Vista
Google Chrome
Norton's Anti-Virus

Here are the problems:

1. Occasional messages saying it cannot find the file. I'll try again and it finds the file
2. Occasional message saying "Office Word not responding"
3. Significant delay in opening existing document and/or new document file. This is the biggest problem I'm having. By delay I'm saying it usually takes at least a minute, sometimes longer to open

I've read that the file "Normal.dot" may be the culprit and could be corrupted or damaged. Before I begin making changes by renaming this file is there a way of knowing if the file is in fact damaged and/or corrupted? Should I just go ahead an do a name change and see if it helps?

If the file is okay or I've changed it and there is no improvement what other reasons could be causing this?
Thanks

That is what I would do.  Just rename it and see what happens.
Word accesses many files while it is loading a file.  I would think it is one of those files that is giving it problems.

I renamed the "normal.dot" file and things have improved.  Office is opening up faster now.   Problem may be solved.
