Windows shutdown can be slow from time to time. Windows XP contains all kinds of internal mechanisms that sometimes deliberately slow down your machine. The functions Shutdown, Restart and Switch User illustrate this clearly. Try checking this guide on slow computer shutdown if you need more detailed steps.

I took out the link in the above email because kiatek106 should have just put the suggestions in his post instead of trying to get everyone to go to his website.  Obviously, instead of trying to help you, he just wanted to get more traffic to his website.
I think that most, if not all, of the suggestions are either not practical or not effective.
These are the things that he suggests:

  • If shutdown slowed down after installing a program, uninstall the program or use System Restore to put your computer back to a time before the install.
  • Run fewer background programs.
  • Defrag your computer.
  • Prevent your computer from clearing the Page File before it shuts down.
  • Clean the registry.
