Op is 32bit Vista Home Premium, Intel Core (TM)2 Duo 2.40GHz, Ram 4.00GB. More times than I would like, the system justs locks, on occassions just after putting password to begin session? I then have to switch off from the socket, then re start! I realise it could be many reasons and I perhaps am not giving enough details? I hope someone can assist. Not happening everytime switch on but is an annoyance when it does! Many Thanks. If I have not got it right, apologies, new to this Q&A board.

   If you cannot shut the computer off the correct way through Windows, you should hold in on the Power button until the computer shuts down (usually 5 to 10 seconds).  Unplugging the computer is not a good way to shut it off.
   Many things can cause what you are describing, like, having too many programs running, having a problem with a program, corrupt Windows files, a corrupt registry, a bad spot on the hard drive, or the phantom Windows bug.
   If it is just an occasional thing that does not happen often, it is best just to put up with it.
