my camcorder records in avi format and windows media player won't play it

I would think that any media player would play avi.  You could use a different media player.  There are many free media players online.

Alternatively, you could use Prism Video Converter software, which has worked well for me and is free from http://www.nchsoftware.com/prism/index.html
