Computer Q&A Board / RegVac / AutoComplete Editor Broken In RegVac Ver. 5.01.06
Posted by: kms250, October 18th, 2007, 8:34am
I'm using Win XP Pro SP2, all known patches applied and using Firefox 2.7 as default browser.
Open RegVac 5.01.06 and attempt to open the AutoComplete editor. However there appears to be some sort of problem with the service because the following error is received: "Service RegVac Registry Service" failed to install with error: "System error. Code 1073 The specified service already exists".
If the dialog boxes are clicked following this message the autocomplete window will appear in the browser in an incomplete manner (no items are listed for editing) and it cannot be edited as the following:
RegVac's
AutoComplete Edit Page
AutoComplete is the feature that shows a list of previously typed words when you type in a textbox of a web form. While convenient, it also can show outdated, revealing, or embarrassing information.
Below you can find out what kind of words are stored in AutoComplete.
* To see the AutoComplete values, put the cursor in a blank textbox for the field name you desire and press the down arrow key.
AutoComplete (and so this point) may not work in some versions of Windows (like, Win98), but if there are textboxes and field names below, something has put items in the AutoComplete list, which in this case is useless. To remove these entries, have A1Cleaner empty the entire list.
* To delete an value, select it by moving your cursor over it and highlighting it (do not click on it), then press the Delete key.
* To add a new value to the list for a particular field name, type it into the corresponding textbox and click Post or press the Enter key.
* To go through the list quicker, press the Tab key to go to the next field.

There was a previous thread indicating a similar sort of problem but the thread is locked and certainly it was an earlier version of RegVac. Post URL is:

The other thread is locked because that problem was fixed and resolved.
The problem you are having is something different. It sounds like the Service is installed incorrectly on your computer. It should only be installed while RegVac is using it to make the AutoComplete list and then it is uninstalled.
I have tried the current version and it works. Something on your computer is messing it up.
Try deleting the service by doing the following:
- Run Regedit or regedt32.
- Find the registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Services
- Find the RegVacService service and delete it.
- Restart Windows.
If you can't find the RegVacService try looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet002/Services

Ray,
Thank you for your reply. I found the registry keys and deleted them and rebooted the computer. No change. I deleted the registry keys again, uninstalled the software and rebooted the computer then reinstalled the software. No change. Anything else I can check? Thanks.

I updated RegVac. Please try the latest version of RegVac and see if it works.

Thank you Ray. I downloaded and installed version 5.01.08, no change.
Here's the entry in the Windows Event Viewer, Event ID=0:
The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( RegVacService ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for details. The following information is part of the event:

Are you using it on a remote computer? Is there any unusual situation that you are running it under?

No, stand-alone computer running Windows XP SP2 all known patches. I found the key S-1-5-21-1409082233-688789844-682003330-1009 in the registry. permissions were set on the key so only the system could access it. I was able to go to it's parent key Protected Storage System Provider and set the permissions so that any child objects would have the same permissions as the parent. I then made a new subkey from the parent: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider\S-1-5-21-1409082233-688789844-682003330-1009\Data\e161255a-37c3-11d2-bcaa-00c04fd929db\e161255a-37c3-11d2-bcaa-00c04fd929db\Windows
However, the auto complete page displays the following without any entries:

I hope this helps.

Yes, the permissions are supposed to be set so that only the system can access them. That is why a Service is used to access it. The Service accesses it as the system.
What you did may have wiped out the AutoComplete list, I don't know.
No one else is having a problem with this, so I have to assume it is something unique to your computer.

Thanks for your help on this Ray. The auto complete list must exist since the user name and password (as appropriate) fields fill in automatically when accessing web sites. It would help me to understand the process of where the autocomplete file is located. I know of a signons2.txt file for Firefox located in the C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\jkk7g88u.default directory I'd like to know where any other related file to the auto complete process is located. If you know and can share this information, that would be greatly appreciated.

As I said before, the autocomplete list is only accessible by the system. You are not the system, so you are not allowed to access it. This is why RegVac uses a Service, so that it can access it because that is the only way that it can access it. Even if you could access it, it is encrypted so that it would not make any sense to you.

Thank you Ray. When RegVserv.exe starts at the execution of starting the process to bring up the user interface (page in a web browser) to allow editing of the auto complete entries, I see RegVserv.exe appear in Windows Task Manager and then after the interface appears RegVserv.exe disappears from the list of Image names running. Is this designed behavior or should RegVserv.exe continue to run until the user interface (web browser page) is closed? As you previously said, it should only be installed while RegVac is using it to make the AutoComplete list and then it is uninstalled. Does this mean it uninstalls after the user interface (web page) appears or after the user interface (web page) is closed? It would make sense to me that the process should close after the user interface (web page) is closed become some action .jsp, etc... has to occur to modify the entries in the encrypted files. Thanks.

That is how it runs. It is uninstalled after the web page is created. It does not wait for the page to be closed.
