Computer Q&A Board  /  Windows  /  unable to reinstall fax console in windows xp

I tried to reinstall Fax Services and Fax Console in Windows XP using the "Add/Remove Windows Components" feature in Control Panel, but the installation fails, because the installer cannot find any of the installations files, such as FXS......dl_.  The installer points to c:\windows\i386, and the files are there, but it still won't install.  I chaged it to point to the Windows XP CD folder d:\i386, where the same files can be found, but to no avail.  HP support that is supposed to provide tech support on OEM software tells me that I have crosslinked files and the only way to fix it is to reinstall my operating system, thereby destroying every piece of software I have installed since I bought this sytem in 2004, something I obviously cannot do.  I tried running CHKDSK which is supposed to find and repair crosslinked files, but it did not help.  Can anyone suggest a workaround solution?

See this article. A repair installation of Windows should fix the problem without causing problems to third party software or your data.
