Computer Q&A Board / Other Computer Problems / New Computer and APC Back-UPS

Our new computer will not recognize the APC Back-UPS. When I try to install the PowerChute software, I get a message saying that the device is an unrecognized USB device and the software won't install. I checked out the USB ports by plugging in the keyboard and they all work. And, in Device Manager, they're all enabled and "working properly". I've been getting the infamous runaround: APC tells me that the computer manufacturer (Acer) didn't install Windows XP Media Center Edition properly, while Acer tells me that APC is responsible for providing the necessary drivers. APC doesn't supply drivers. Nor will they walk me through any necessary BIOS changes. This happened with the first APC unit, which I returned. Same thing is happening with the replacement unit. This is extremely annoying, in that I installed an APC Back-UPS on our other computer (running Windows XP Pro) with no problems. And, yes, APC says that this unit (model RS 800) works with Windows XP Media Center Edition. Any suggestions on how to resolve this issue will be appreciated!

APC Back-UPS normally shows up in device manager under batteries and human interface devices.
There are no drivers required for the listing under batteries and Microsoft provides drivers for the human interface device listing.
For some reason Windows isn't detecting the device correctly.
Try deleting the unknown device, reboot and see if it is correctly detected.
If not, try using the add new hardware wizard, select battery as the device and APC as the manufacturer, perhaps that will work.

The issue was solved by returning the Acer computer, which had numerous infuriating "issues". Got an HP desktop and the APC backup worked perfectly on the first try. I never could figure out what was wrong with the Acer. Neither could any of the techs at either APC or Acer.
