Computer Q&A Board / Other Computer Problems / Lines on Desktop

I am running Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.
I have a Biostar (M7NCG 400) w/AMD 3000 processor. XGI Volari Family v1.13.04. Display Adapter. I have a question which I hope someone can help me with. When I start up in the morning my destop has lines running up and down all the way across the destop I can still see the destop and the computer stops responding and I restart and it is ok except for one line which looks like a fence in the middle of my destop running horizontal which goes away after awhile. The verticle lines only happen once in awhile but I think they are a precurser of something going to happen. Does anyone know what is happening. Thanks

Check for a new driver for your video card. If the problem persists after getting the latest driver, or if this is the only problem showing up, then either the video card or the monitor is preparing to go out.
The vertical lines usually indicate problems with a capacitor. My best guess is the monitor is the problem hardware.

I appreciate you reply. But I don't think the monitor is the problem as I have been using the monitor with a backup computer and there has not been any lines. I also installed a new video driver. So time will tell as I don't have the foggiest. Thanks so much for your help.

My messup, I should also have mentioned that this could be due to a power supply problem.

Thanks for the update. Just out of curiosity, what video card did you get as a replacement? :)

Thanks for asking I got a relatively cheap card since I wasn't sure about the problem: Newegg had the following card "PNY Verto GeForce FX 5200 / 256MB DDR / PCI / Dual VGA / Video Card" and its been 3 days and everything is working fine.
