Computer Q&A Board / Other Computer Problems / Office 2003 Pro and Outlook installation
Posted by: Gary A, March 16th, 2007, 6:24am
I have Office 2003 Pro installed. I keep getting an update notice for Outlook 2003 KB931764 ( Junk mail filter). It fails installation. I Checked for validation and am told that my computer fails validation, however when I check for activations it is activated and my Windows XP Pro Sp2 passes validation. I am using XP Pro w SP2 and Office 2003 Pro. What is going on here? I had a Computer crash two weeks ago and had to replace motherboard. Since I re installed I have faced the above mentioned problem. Prior to the crash and with the same exact software I had no problems at all.Can anyone shed some light on this?
Thanks;
Gary A

Gary:
I've had a bit of this myself... Remember, activation is a different animal from validation.
Validation is MS's way of checking that the key used to register wasn't from a pirated copy... And this method use has taken a lot of heat for "false fails".
A Windows validation is different from an Office validation -- one can pass and the other fail. They are separate and distinct, just as activation and validation are as well... So you have several scenarios possible, as you can see.
Assuming your software IS valid, meaning not bought from one of the $79 for Office 2003 Pro, then you should gather up your receipts and call MS first, and, failing that, (50/50 chance there) you'll have to go back to your seller for restitution.
Sorry, but yes, it's a pain.

Its failed validation (I suspect) because it sees the new motherboard as a new computer - i.e. M'soft's validation tool reckons that your O/S is on a different computer from what it should be, which of course it effectively is !
In my experience it is usually only a motherboard change which will create this problem.
