Computer Q&A Board  /  Other Programs  /  Word - Changing Defaults
Posted by: suepollock, January 8th, 2007, 1:34pm
Yet another question that has completely stumped me; I am using MS Office 2003 and would consider myself an advanced user but I am at my wits end. I changed my defaults in Word, etc. (i.e. font, customized toolbars, etc.) to suit my needs for my work. However, the changed default settings will not hold once I close Word, Excel or the other programs. I close the program and come back to it later only to find the defaults are back to the original program settings.

I have tried everything I can think of to have it hold the changed settings but no success. Do any of you have any ideas of how to fix this to save the changed settings?

Thanks in advance for your "life-saving" answers.

I am just learning this myself, but try this:

Start a document and choose the font, etc., that you want.  This is to create a template; you don't have to write anything in the document unless you want to create a heading, etc.

Go to File, Save As, and click on Template.  Then give this template a name. You can also choose whether or not you want it to be your usual, default template.

If not, you can easily find it the next time you open Works:  Click on Templates at the top, then scroll down the list on the left to  Personal Templates.  When you open that, you will see the one you just made.

Hope this helps!

I'm willing to try anything. I even saved over my normal.dot template and that didn't work. I'll let you know how and if it works!  Again, thanks so much!!!

I couldn't get it to work that way either but what is did do is delete my normal.dot and then reopened Word. I made my changes with the margins, fonts, toolbars, etc., closed Word and it made another normal.dot on its own. It works fine and is holding all the changes! All I do now is open Word and I'm ready to go.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
