Computer Q&A Board  /  Internet  /  OE addressbook corrupted...
Posted by: sgt, October 29th, 2006, 4:20am
OE will not allow me to send mail. It says my addressbook is corrupted and it's not configured properly. It tells me to reinstall OE.

1. I tried copying a saved address book...didn't work

2. I tried deleting it (thought I could 'import')...didn't work

3. Don't know where to find a copy of OE to reinstall.

Outlook Express is a Windows component.
If you will go to the control panel, you will see Add or Remove Programs. When you open this you will get a list of programs on your computer. Find Outlook Express and remove it. Then look on the left side and you will see Add/Remove Windows Components. Open this and you will see Outlook Express on the list. You can reinstall it from there.
After you do this, be sure to go to Windows Update to get the latest updates for Outlook Express, which would also have been removed when you uninstalled the program.

Already tried that...it's not listed. Not in my Add or Remove Programs nor Add/Remove Windows Components. That's why I posted.

In all the years of my working with computers (22 to be exact) I've never come across this problem.

This is apparently a hot issue with OE right now. A recent update apparently caused this problem.
The Microsoft solution:

Hope this solves the problem :)

Thanks, dlwolff0...

Interesting...it says:
"unable to open address book. Address book may not be installed correctly"

Mine says:
"unable to open address book. Outlook Express may not be installed correctly"
and...I don't have security update 911567??? So I can't uninstall it. Looks like I'll have to go into battle with them once again. I hate it...exhausts me.

I liked the convenience of being able to send mail without opening any mail program.

A couple of months ago one of their updates destroyed my system and they wound up paying for a new 500g hard drive (as against paying to rescue my files and restore my system).

Anyway...would appreciate it much, if you come across anything else, to let me know. I 'fixed' everything else but that and it's such an irritant.

Check out this article, it could be just what you want.

This one may actually solve the problem. :)

A minor question of my own. Since OE isn't listed under Windows Components on your computer, are you possibly running a customized version of IE?

yes I am...

It seems OE is installed along with IE, whenever you upgrade or change IE.
I would try reinstalling your customized version of IE and see if that fixes OE.
If not, your only option may be to go back to the standard IE version. IE 7.0 is available now and it is working OK for me so far.
Good luck :)

Thanks anyway, dlwolff0...tried that as well. Guess I'll just have to do without OE or do a whole system reinstall...

I was hoping that there might be a 'stand-alone' for it. Again, thanks for trying...
