Computer Q&A Board  /  Windows  /  HP Pavillion not sleeping soundly

I have Win XP, when the computer is idle, it keeps shutting off and in a few  seconds it comes back on , the blue light goes out and the monitor and both printers shut down, then the blue light comes back on and it all starts back up again. It does this on a    regular basic. I talked to HP(or rather tried to talk to HP, but the English is really bad), the man said it may be my battery pack and surge protector. That I need to unplug everything  and plug in to the wall. Then buy one of HP surge protectors. this one is only a few months old and I paid $60. for it. Do you think it is something else, maybe just a glitch in the computer.Any Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.Pat

I noticed the other day that my computer (which is an HP Pavilion too) did the same thing.  I don't think that it usually does that though.  Something is waking it up.  It sounds like the tech people at HP thought it was a surge that was waking it up.  It could also be other things like the mouse or movement in the room.
I just had the RAM memory chips go bad on mine and I think it was because I always let the computer go idle like that.  Now I try to put the computer in Hibernation when I know that I am not going to be around for a while.
You can change what your computer does when it is idle in the Power Options section of the Control Panel.  By default it is set to go into System Standby after 10 minutes of inactivity.  When it is in this state, it still is monitoring certain things like the mouse and keyboard, so it is not completely shut down.  System Hibernates is more of a complete shutdown and requires pushing the On/Off button to start back up (instead of moving the mouse or pressing a key), but you should not have a problem with the computer coming back on when it is not supposed to.  To change it, set System standby to Never and System hibernates to After 10 mins.
