Computer Q&A Board / Windows / Making data-disks
Posted by: Anashwaran, September 17th, 2006, 7:48pm
One more question to a problem I had many times.
Using Nero for burning CD's i thought that making some data-disks whith files on my PC would be like a back-up somehow.
But then, when doing this, often I do not find any files or datas on the CD! >:(
The do not appear in the system. Often it is said 0bytes, or nodisk at all, and I cannot use these backups anymore.
How is that?
The program in Nero says: Make data-disk.
So you can add all kinds of files and then burn it to CD.
Is it a question of the writing methods ? I use always Track at once and finalize disk.
Or is it again a windows-problem?
Thanks for any information

That sounds like a WinXP bug. XP stops recognizing the CD and the contents on it. Usually after a few days, Windows will start recognizing it again.

Would you say that the procedure per se is correct?
So I do not have to change my way of doing these backups?
Thanks for your help

Anash-Actually I know nothing about the virus itself but I to have been getting that message and unable to burn with media player-This has never happened before so I have no idea what it is-I may have to just re-install mp 10-maybe with mp 12 or whatever the new one is-I also have a couple other burning programs on here as well as a new Virus protection program-Have you tried turning off the firewall or lowering your security?_I will try that before re-installing-I know certain copy software clash when run together-

Anash-Just so ya know I have Nero as well but never use it because of the problems I;ve had with it-Some people love it-When it tells you to put the disk in -be sure you are using the right type media-Is is DVD-R OR RW or + -What does your burner allow for?-Will it read and write both plus and minus?-What brand of blank dvds or cds or you using-The cheap ones will give you many errors and rejections-The player will keep rejecting them even though they are clean and new-Get good ones like Sony or Maxell-When the Nero tells you to put in the disk' you should hear it starting up and begin copying and the light should be flashing as it writes the files-Make sure the blanks are bigger then the file your burning-and last-with Nero-be sure the file is not copy right protected-they are a stickler on that-If it is-then you can email me personally for advice or read up on some dvd burning forums on your options-good luck

To Robspace1
Thanks for your kind support.
Normally I do what you advice and I'm using TDK disks -R because my DVD/CD burner is -DR.
I never use the + because all my installations work with -
So this is not a problem.
Will go on checking and trying, maybe start using other programs as well to see.
Thanks a lot

Anash-I am a long way away from being an expert at burning but I know I tried many different combinations before finding one that works most of the time for cds or dvds-TDK is good-I have as well-They are not the best but good-The copy software you use-Nero-As I said has caused me problems in the past-If you want to try another program I would suggest the number 1 rated system out there-1Click DVD COPY PRO-or 1Click DVD Copy 5-MY opinion only but it is rated the best for a reason-

If it is the WinXP bug, you should be able to put the CD (which WinXP says has nothing on it or does not recognize it as a CD) in another computer and that computer will show what is on the CD.
There seems to be some procedure or situation that trips WinXP's bug. What programs trip this bug, I don't know.
