Computer Q&A Board / Other Computer Problems / USB 2.0 Flash / Key Drive driver
Posted by: alanturk, August 3rd, 2006, 2:47pm
I bought a USB 2.0 Flash / Key Drive as a gift for my grandson. I tried it on my Windows XP system, and it performed well, but although his Windows 98 system recognised the new hardware, it evidently hasn't a suitable driver. The suppliers were quite snooty about it, pointing out that their website clearly states that they do not supply drivers. An internet search revealed nothing - perhaps I supplied the wrong search criteria! So where can I find one? The device is useless to him without a driver. Is it even possible to copy my XP driver and install it in W98, and if so, how?Can anyone help, please?

You need to look on the manufacturer's website for drivers for the device.
Most of the manufacturers that I checked had drivers for Win98 posted.

No, I do not think that it is possible to use the XP drivers in 98.

Would you post exactly which flash drive you bought -- the make and model. I have found many of the flash drives will install, with a driver, on Win98SE (note the SE meaning Second Edition) but not on plain vanilla Win98. I do have one that I bought when the flash drives first started coming out -- and that one works on Win98. I'm sure it is no longer available.

Thanks everyone for your comments. My grandson is away from home with his family just now, so I'm unable to check what works and what doesn't for a while. The device I bought seems to be unbranded - no indication of who is its manufacturer. I previously bought one for myself, that bears the name Viking, and on the outside it looks very similar, so it may be the same. An internet search reveals many organisations selling Viking products, but so far I haven't identified a Viking website. If I should find it in due course, I'll try them for a driver and see if it can be used with W98. I'm fairly sure it's actually W98SE, but I'd need to check to be sure. Thanks again.
