My outlook express inbox shows practically all messages as having attachments ( paperclip shows)  but they do not actually have attachments.  I presume I must have inadvertently set this, but can't find any way to correct it .

Are you using AVG free edition?

double click AVG icon taskbar, select e-mail scanner, properties, then configure in email tab. Under email scanning uncheck -certify mail

How can one tell if they have the avg free edition?

move your mouse over the AVG icon on your task bar, bottom right corner,  and  the words - AVG Free edition - Control Centre  - will show up.
The AVG square icon is in four colors - yellow, black, green and red....
