Computer Q&A Board / Windows / Problem installing printer driver
Posted by: trunge, March 8th, 2006, 1:31pm
I recently purchased a new Canon printer. When I went to install the drivers, the program aborted at 60% with an error message that said "Add Printer Driver Module Could Not Be Found". I thought maybe the CD was the problem, so I downloaded the driver software from Canon and saved it to my computer. When I tried to run the install, the exact same thing happened. I ended up letting XP install the driver, and then went in and manually updated it with the downloaded driver. The end result is that I got it installed, but am at a loss as to why I was running into this problem. I did a google search in the newsgroups and ran across several other people who had the exact problem, even to having the failure at 60%, (one from 2002) but never did find a solution to fixing it. I checked the MS help area and could not find it either, although it may be there somewhere. Any idea as to what could be causing the error that I got, or how to fix it? Thanks.

I wonder if the Canon people could help you with this. You might try calling them and see if they know what the problem was.

I did contact Canon, but the suggestion from them was to do a selective startup to prevent any programs from loading, thinking that something running in the background may be interferring with the Canon software. This did not help, so I did some more research on the net and found this:
First ensure you have the latest Windows Service Pack installed. If this doesn't solve the problem, follow these steps.
1. Check that the file 'framedyn.dll' is present on your system in the \Windows\system32\wbem directory.
2. If not, copy the 'framedyn.dll' file from another Windows computer to the \Windows\system32\wbem directory.
3. Right-click on 'My Computer' and select 'Properties'.
4. Click on the 'Advanced' tab followed by the 'Environment Variables' button.
5. Under System varibles highlight the Path entry and click the Edit button.
6. Add '%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;' into the Variable value text box and click OK.
7. Restart your computer
The framedyn.dll was in my Wbem directory. I did not have a variable named "Path". I had one named Pathext, but did not think it would be the same, so I created a new variable named Path and put the text listed above in the variable box. After restarting the computer, I was able to run the install driver program with no problems.
