Computer Q&A Board  /  Other Computer Problems  /  Flashed BIOS with the wrong file

I have just tried flashing the BIOS on an old mother board - unfortunately with the wrong file. It installed, but of course I get a checksum error. I do not appear to be able to re-flash it with the corrcxt file, i.e. it won't happen !

Any clever person got a good idea ?

On most motherboards, you can put a jumper across the CMOS chip, which will cause it to reset to its original BIOS data.
After the reset, you should be able to flash it with the correct update.

thank you for that - I am grateful for your reply.

However, I did that and it comes up with a Checksum Error: guess I shall have to bite the bullet and buy another mobo !

Did you try going into the BIOS and restoring defaults or is it too far gone for that?

Hi

no - it is, as you suggest, too far gone for that: it does not even get to the BIOS. Anyway, I have discovered I can get a replacement motherboard for £35 (about $60) so I think I shall have to bite the bullet.

Thanks anyway

Many motherboards have removable BIOS chips.  If yours is removable you can buy a replacement.  I believe that some services will also reprogram your present chip.  Unplugging the BIOS chip works well if you're reasonably careful.
