When simulating a situation where my daughter can't boot from the hard drive on her new Dell, the ONLY way I have succeeded in booting from elsewhere has been from DOS (or from some special Windows PEs which are so small and complicated that I can't work with them).

Would I be able to use the DOS version of WinRescue 7 to restore the registry?  (I realize that I might have to hunt to identify the proper disk.)

Would this work on the trial version of WinRescue 7, so that I could try it out?

DOS only works on FAT drives.  Win7 is usually on NTFS drives.  So if you boot using DOS and try to find files on the harddrive, it will not find them.
WinRescue 7 does not come with a DOS version.  Other WinRescues, like WinRescue XP, do have a DOS version which can be used.
