Our son has a computer running XP that does not shutdown completely.  Just before closing out a blue screen comes up saying that there is a problem with some hardware or software which needs attention.  The computer starts and runs OK (seemingly), but he always needs to push the on off button to finally turn the machine off.  I'm not sure when this problem began so I can't go back to a point when something was added.  Is there an easy way to locate the problem without deleting and reloading each software program one at a time?

First, look at the error message and see if it gives you some clue as to what is causing the problem.  If not, go into the Task Manager and close the Applications.  If that does not solve the problem, the next time go into the Task Manager and close the Applications and as many of the Processes as it takes to find the problem.  The problem should be one of the Applications and/or one of the Processes.
