Hello Ray, Interesting article on shortcuts. But how do I remove the arrows? In Windows XP I used TweakUI to remove them. This program does not work with Windows 7 however. All suggestions welcome! Rob Jager

I don't know if this will work in Windows 7 but it is worth a try. Type regedit in the upper textbox of Windows Explorer. This will start RegEdit. In RegEdit find and expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/lnkfile. Click on lnkfile. In the right hand box, delete IsShortcut by clicking on IsShortcut and pressing delete. That should remove the shortcut arrow. You can do a search for IsShortcut to find other items that have the shortcut arrow and remove it if you want. You may need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
Many thanks to you, Laverne. The tip was very useful, but a still better one is found in one of the letters at the end of the program: use TuneUp Utilities 2010. You can download a 30-day trial version. Under the "Customize Windows" header, click on "Appearance of Icons" and uncheck "Show shortcut arrow". Click Apply and restart your computer. The arrows have gone! Again thank you! Rob
