While attempting to copy a file to a new folder, I mistakenly highlighted the text of the file clicked copy, then tried to paste it into the new folder.  Dumb, I know, but what showed up in the new folder was something called, simply, scrap without an extension.  I cannot open, rename, delete, or perform any operation on it.  The error box says it is in use by another application and to close all programs associated with it.  I have restarted, shut down and waited several minutes, then rebooted and opened the folder and tried to remove it, all to no avail.  Search cannot find it.  I even tried disk cleanup and defrag but it persists. I can stand the disk usage (only 126 KB), but not the clutter in the folder.  This occurred in Word 2003 running under Win XP SP2/SP3. Any suggestions?

You just used OLE (Object Linking and Embedding). Right-click on the Scrap file and select Rename.
Rename it to Oops.txt
If you now open it you will see all the data you copied.
At this point you should be able to delete it. If not check microsoft OLE help
