Ok, so my husband is in Iraq and I have a dvd of an ultrasound I've been trying to get online to show him.

The only thing I can figure out how to do is play it on windows media player, but it won't let me rip it unless it's a music file.

I've tried saving it to another file and what not to upload to youtube or onetruemedia but they say that it is not recognizeable. I do notice that my computer automatically breaks this dvd up into 6 chapters..

I am getting very frustrated. How can I rip this DVD to a recognizeable file on my computer to upload to a video hosting site?

Have you tried pressing the Alt key when Windows Media Player has the file loaded?  This will cause a menu to appear.  The File submenu should have a Save As... item on it.  If it is not grayed out, you should be able to use it to save the file.
And...if congratulations are in order, Congratulations.
