[I downloaded Real Player onto Windows XP. It changed my music settings so I can no longer hear Wav music. My modem is now 33.6 kbps, real player is ( was ) set at 28.8 kbps. ( got this when it flashed on the screen to install Real Player ) Think it's suppose to be the other way around. cannot do system restore as I have symantec "go back" and it won't go back a week. I have since uninstalled Real Player I am not a "computer person" I can get around but don't know the "language" There must be some way to reset this so it will go back to the way it was. Tried Dell, Symantec and Microsoft people. They don't seem to understand what I'm saying. One even said I woould have to reinstall the whole Windows program !Can anyone help me please? |

To play the .wav files, choose one, right click on it [to bring up the context menu]. Choose "Open With", this should bring up a window asking what program you want to open the file with. The music player you want to use may or may not be displayed. If it isn't displayed, then click browse and navigate to the .exe file of the player you want to use. If you are using dialup Internet, your modem speed is determined by your ISP when you connect to its network. It will normally be somewhat different every time you connect. Your actual modem is probably able to connect at 56 kbps, unless it is a very old one, but you will rarely get anywhere near that figure. |

Yes I can do this thanks. It's when I go to a site like Piano Nancys'World and click on a song title to hear it that I get no sound only the box to download the song , which I don'e want to do.On Nancys site ( and others ) I can hear the music on the home page but none on the wav pages. Would downloading Windows media Player again take care of this? And if I did download would I first have to uninstall the Windows Media Player I have on here now? |

The browser uses a Windows media player plugin, if you can hear any music then it is working. When you reassociate the .wav files with the player, you should be able to hear them also. |

That's what the initial post was about. Your computer has a program associated with opening any type of file. That's why you couldn't open .wav files after uninstalling Real Player. When you install it, it takes over opening any files it can, unless you tell it not to in the preferences section. When you do the right click and open with, you reassociate .wav files with Windows Media Player, so that your computer will use it to open those files again. Once that is done, the browser plug in should also open them. |

When I go to Nancys' page for example I click on what artist I want to hear. When the page comes up I click on the song I want tp hear. before media player always came up automatically and started playing the song. Now it doesn't , a box comes up asking if I want to "find or save" . I can get no music or media player to come up. Real player did something to the settings for this and that setting is what I'm trying to get back. |

Apparently, I have been unclear in my answers to your question. So I will quote directly from Microsoft.
Change the program that opens a type of file
If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.
Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
Do one of the following:
If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK. |

There is probably a better way than I'm giving you but this will work. Open windows explorer, open folder options. (This button won't be there unless you've customized the buttons.) Click on file types. Find the extensions assigned to Real and change them to what you want. Probably WMP. |
