I want to know everything!

I am running a Gateway dual core system with 2024 Mb of ram Windows XP 32 bit. I am trying to upgrade my memory with another 1012 mb of ram. Every time I install the memory chips the screen goes blank. Any suggestions as to what I;m doing wrong and how I can fix the problem?

Hopefully the computer is off, when you install the new memory modules.
Things to check:
What frequency do the new memory modules run at?
Are the new modules compatibile with the modules already installed?
Does the motherboard support the amount of RAM you are installing?
How many RAM banks does the motherboard have and how much RAM is going into each bank?
Is this DDR or DDR2 RAM?

Where does the screen go blank? Does the BIOS run? Does Windows fail to boot after the BIOS runs?

i brought the modules from crucial they scanned my computer and sent me the exact modules I needed. I was told by Crucial that XP won't recognize 4024 mb of ram and that my video card driver was the culprit so I up graded the video card drivers.  I have 4 banks and the manufacture (Gateway) says that the mother board should run with 4024 mb of ram. DDR 2 ram. It boots all the way to windows and then shuts down.
And, yes the computer is turned off and my static strap is on. :>)

Adding on to an earlier reply, check that you are installing the RAM into the same bank. RAM in the same bank needs to be the same.
After that, try running the computer with the new RAM after pulling out the old RAM. If the computer doesn't start the RAM may be faulty or incompatible.
If it starts, replace the old RAM. If startup again fails, you either have incompatible RAM or have them installed in the wrong place.
