Hi - I have cable modem intrnet service. After a certain time, (perhaps 8 hours), seeming randomly, I lose the internet connection. I am using Windows XP, a Motorola SB5103 modem, and a Netgear WGR614 Wireless Router. I restore the internet by either rebooting, logging off and on, turning the modem off, unplugging the router, in no order and I have no idea what works.

Any ideas about the source of the problem?

Thanks, Ken

There are a number of things that could cause that.  I would contact your cable company and see if they can help you.

Thanks for your reply, no - I am not using Comcast, but I do suspect that it is my cable provider. It is a small local cable company. I called the cable company and the person I spoke with said they were having problems too! It is very frustrating.

Regards, Ken

We use a cable company for our internet connection at work.  When it works it is very good but we have had the same problems that you have experienced for over a year.  Every time that I contact them they do something remotely and it seems to work for awhile.  Just recently I told them to fix it or I would find another service.  They came out and replaced the modem and so far we are not having any problems.

Periodically (sometimes after a week, sometimes after a month), my cable internet would have connection problems too.  Sometimes rebooting the modem fixed it, sometimes it would correct itself after a few hours, but usually I would have to call the cable company to fix it.  After many of these disconnects and the cable guy coming out to fix it, he explained that he did not know what the problem was.  He had replaced all of the connectors and replaced filters (usually replacing the filters would get it running again for a while).  Then one day he found a connection that he had missed before.  It was just a metal connector that connected two cables together.  He replaced it.  I haven't had a problem since.
