The following question was asked at the end of a different thread by corandy.

   Is there a good utility for backing-up Outlook Express emails?

   I have moved this over to its own thread since it was a different topic.  My reply was:

   All you have to do is make copies of the dbx files in the Outlook Express email directory to back up the emails.  Do a search for *.dbx and you should find them.

Ray, thanks for the info.  I already knew about copying the dbx files but it is a bit more complicated than that.  First you have to find the right dbx file, copy it, set up a new Outlook Express folder (e.g. "Resued Inbox"), find the storage location for "Rescued Inbox", rename the recovered Inbox dbx folder as "Rescued Inbox.dbx" and then copy this to the storage location of Rescued Inbox.

I was wondering if anybody wrote an backup utility program to do this?

I'll start a new thread of inquiry.

   Just copy them to a new folder.  Then when you need to restore them, copy them back or import them in.  I am not sure why you would rename the file.

Ray,the reason for renaming the files is that the rescued emails cannot directly be comingled in the same Inbox with any new emails.  That is, the storage location for the Inbox will be confused if there are two identically named Inbox.dbx files.

Renaming prevents the loss of any new emails and also ensures that the new version knows about the rescued emails being copied over.

AFTER the rescued emails are recovered and in a separate folder they can then be moved using Outlook Express to any other folder in Outlook Express.

It is a pity that Microsoft didn't include an email backup utility.
