[I have a Presario 6450NX compaq comp.with win.XP SP2 with one bothersome problem that I have been unable to correct and that is "turn off computer" either turnoff or restart. What happens is when I click on turnoff or restart the right light goes off but the left light stays on and of course the monitor.I am assuming the right light indicates the comp.status.The only way to shut down completely is to push the on/off button on the face of the comp.I know this is no big deal but it really bugs me.I might mention that every so often when I press the turnoff button it operates as is suppose to;but not very often. One other thing is when I use my goback program upon completion it turns the comp. off and restarts it. . By this I mean that the monitor is left with the screen showing Windows is shutting down.If I turn off thr monitor and then turn it back on the same image is there.Hope you can help as I have tried a number of places and no response.Thak You Dan

I have had a similar problem, and have no answer to what causes it. I have used a program from Steve Gibson, wizmo.exe, a program that runs a number of options, including a shutdown module that overrides Windows XP (and other versions) shutdown delays.
You can find the program at http://www.grc.com.
If this method does not work, I would check for a hardware problem.

You may be encountering a stop error at shutdown, this will cause the computer to hang and not complete its shutdown process.

If you recently installed a new piece of hardware or drivers are corrupted or out of date, a stop error can occur.  Also look to any programs like spyware/virus suites that may be having problems shutting down.

You can use msconfig (Start, run, "msconfig," encter) to shut down your start-up programs and see if the problem clears, then reactivate one at a time till you isolate the problem program.

Hope this helps
