Strange things happen with Windows Update.
Until about a month ago, I was using Win2000. If I went directly to the Windows Update site, your problem would happen to me. The updates would download, install and then I would see at the summary page that the update had failed

I finally discovered by chance that there was a link in the control panel under Automatic Updates that said "download updates from the Windows Update site".
If I clicked on that link, then the updates would be installed and work

Why this was so, I never discovered. It must have been some sort of registry quirk.
So far, this problem has not shown up in WinXP.

I have only had problems with one update so far.  When I had that problem, I went to the Update website (there was a link on the Update dialogs, I think) which had forums and found a solution to the problem.
So you might look in those forums and if your problem is not listed, you should be able to post your problem.  It sounded like the Microsoft programmers answer the forums.
