I want to get rid of Norton on my machine. I am using Windows XP  home edition. I can never open any attachments nor do many downloads when I want to.I get an error saying Norton does not support the repair feature and please reinstall.
I have gone into the add or remove feature but although it shows the norton features on the left hand column there is no information in the right hand column  and no way to delete anything about Norton.
I have even been to the Symantec web site and that is the instruction it gives for removal. Can onyone help??????????

Depends on what version of Norton you running on your computer.
There is a removal tool on the Symantec web site, but it only works for certain versions of the product. Search Symantec's web site for symNRT.exe.
This will completely remove the supported versions from your computer.

If you have an unsupported version, you may have to reinstall it and then uninstall with the Windows add/remove feature.

Hello, I had the same problem with my Norton product which was the Norton everything included. It does this problem with XP SP2. Solution: you can delete the whole thing starting with Norton itself and then the other parts of it. I f you have deleted something in the wrong order, just reinstall the bloody thing and do as said in the instructions. Look that you also delete the folders after you restarted you computer but not before that. It takse 2-3 shutdowns and all should be gone. Also check registries after that if necessary.
The Norton product just for Virus protection ie Antivirus works just fine. Dont take any of these bundled programs into XP SP2 machines, you might get this kind of problems.

I am coming late ! I got this problme with <norton a long time ago ; apparently this was solved by your former buddies in this forum ; ok Iam happy ; here some other possibilities :first of all there is a Windows cleaning tool: Windows Install clean up ; it should particularly work for Norton Remnants ; but to use it , the program first has to be installed and recognized as such by this tool ; other trials were completely unsuccessfull in particular , use this tool INSTEAD of add/remove , in case you know the program is "sticky" , you will have to clean it first by using Windows Install clean up ; you just download it (a very tiny program) from micrososft.com ;
another possibility is to use the very remarquable : JV16powertools which is not free but really inexpensive in comporaison with its tremaendous possibilities : you can just manage everything in your pC from this program ; consider serching in the registry by typing Norton and first of all clean your registry using Regvac ; next step before browsing your registry with JV 16 PT is to use the same tool to find which programs are installed ; you may remove the registry Keys from there .
Finally a pretty good (but far from perfect ) uninstaller is ADVANCED UNINSTALLER PRO from Innovative solutions .
I work ususlly with this one , turning only to others when this one does not work .

I had a similar problem a while ago, without the tools recommended in the previous post. I could not reinstall Systemworks because the installation program stopped with a message "Previous version of Systemworks installed. Please remove the previous version before installing." I was trying to re-install the same version of NSW [2003].
I removed it by the "brute force" method [after backing up my registry and drive]. Using RegEdit (Windows 2K version], I found and deleted every value/key mentioning "NAV", "Symantec" and "Norton". Now I would add "SAV." Then I deleted the subdirectories in Program Files.
It took a few minutes, but worked.
I had previously tried a program called symclean.exe from Symantec, which did not help.  Another program RNAV (maybe now RNTNav) helped some, but left references to things such as ccApp.dll.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried them all but finally decidec to do a pc restore and that's what it took to get rid of Norton. As soon as I started fresh I was able to remove every trace by using tha add/remove feature. It is completely gone even from the registry. I have no more problems,,,,,,,,,,,yet. I sometimes feel as if another shoe is going to drop. Just paranoid I guess!!
