I HAVE A  PROBLEM WITH OPEN APPLICATIONS.   WHEN I AM IN  MY  CHAT ROOM  I ALWAYS  OPEN  WAVMAN, WHICH IS A PROGRAM FOR SENDING SONGS AND LISTENING TO IN  CHAT ROOM.  IF I TRY TO READ MY MAIL OR DO ANYTHING ELSE   WHILE  IN CHAT ROOM  OR WHILE  WAVMAN IS ON  I GET THE FOLLOWING  MESSAGE:  "YOUR COMPUTER IS RUNNING VERY LOW ON AVAILABLE  SYSTEM RESOURCES TO COMPLETE  THIS REQUEST. PLEASE CLOSE OTHER APPLICATIONS OR RESTART."  IT NEVER USE TO DO THIS BEFORE.  I HAVE  BUNDLES  OF FREE SPACE ON MY  HARD DRIVE   AND  LOTS OF MEMORY.  CAN  ANYONE HELP ME?   THANKS

The problem is not having enough free space or RAM memory.  The problem is that Windows only allows you to run a certain amount of items (or resources).  Some programs use more resources than others.  And so they would cause more problems.
Earlier versions of Windows were worse at this then WinXP (that is probably why Jogor asked whether you are using WinME).
All I know to do is not have as many programs open (especially the ones you know cause problems).

ME is a very well know resourse hog, my suggestion would be to reboot your computer prior to going to you chat room and only have what ever programs open that you really need, this can also involve altering you boot up so that you don't have a heap of programs loading that you don't need like Microsoft office, you printer and scanner programs etc which are still accessible when you need them. You can turn off a lot of these in msconfig

You could post a list of what you have in there and we could make some guesses
