I have an Averatec 3200 series laptop, Mobile AMD Athlon XP-M with 1 gig of ram, it came with XP Home and when I began using the computer at work, I upgraded to XP Pro. Since then, 2 major issues. 1. When you scroll down the screen, it is not smooth, it is very "jerky" and takes awhile to scroll down the page. 2. The computer will not "sleep" or "hibernate" now. When I go to the setting to activate these choices, they are not even there. I've contacted the manufacturer but they want a hugh fee to troubleshoot it since I have changed the factory configuration. Anyone dealt with this before or have and ideas or suggestions?

You mean like in your Interenet Browser?

or in applications, as well?

What internet browser and what version are you using? (Internet Explorer, Moziall Firefox, Opera.. etc.)

if you use Internet Explorer - Click Tools/Internet Options and look at the Advanced tab. See if 'Use smooth scrolling' is checked. (It's about half way down the advanced tab.)

And for the second part.. Usually, problems with standby and hibernate are due to problems with the system BIOS.

You need to go to BIOS settings to make sure you have a ACPI option or Power option and see if it's enabled.. Advanced Power Management (APM) or Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)..

But also, this behavior can occur if the computer is using a VGA video driver. The VGA driver supplies basic video functionality only. The VGA driver does not supply power management functionality, because that functionality is specific to individual video cards.

You'll need to install a new driver..

Wow, there are tons of things that could cause this..

It will be hard to trouble shoot without being in front of it.. try the above two solutions.. let me know and we'll see if we can try something else!

I'm using IE 6.0 w/sp2, this behavior is also present in outlook. I checked the smooth scrolling box you mentioned, but that did not help. I was having the same problem in other applications, but after checking that box, it seemed to help. I don't see how that would be related to other applications though. As far as the BIOS, i will check that next.

Regarding the inability to hibernate the computer, check this knowledge base article. Interestingly this applies only to computers with 1 GB of ram.

Most probably it is the video driver. Install the latest driver for yuor video card. Outdated drivers can prevent the computer from hybernatig.
