One of my HDs has the partitions D:, G:, and N:.
D: contains all my programs.
Since a few days ago, at every computer boot or restart of Windows (Win XP, SP3), the computer does a 'consistency check' for D:.
No bad sectors are ever found and Win is loaded fine and working properly.

What could this recurring check mean?

It could mean that your harddrive is dying.  If it is an older drive, I would buy a new one and transfer all of your files to it.
