For some time RegVac has been reporting it cannot carry out a registry backup because it is unable to locate file MSIMG32.dll. Having used a work-around for that 'problem' up til now, today I decided to investigate further. Ended up by downloading and installing the latest RegVac 5.01.04, but the problem still persists.

My system is Vista 64 bit Home Premium and I have run into 32 bit incompatibility before since I got this machine last June. I wondered if the 32 part of the missing file name had anything to do with this so checked the system32/regvac directory and found a number of backups including 3 with today's date. They all appear to have substantial content but I am concerned they may be corrupted.

I have not heard of that.  It sounds like your msimg32.dll file is corrupt or missing.  That file comes with Windows.  You should be able to get it from your Windows CD or somewhere online like http://www.dlldll.com.
