Hello Ray,
Interesting article on shortcuts. But how do I remove the arrows? In Windows XP I used TweakUI to remove them. This program does not work with Windows 7 however.
All suggestions welcome!

I don't know if this will work in Windows 7 but it is worth a try.
Type regedit in the upper textbox of Windows Explorer.  This will start RegEdit.
In RegEdit find and expand HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT/lnkfile.
Click on lnkfile. In the right hand box, delete IsShortcut by clicking on IsShortcut and pressing delete.  That should remove the shortcut arrow.
You can do a search for IsShortcut to find other items that have the shortcut arrow and remove it if you want.
You may need to restart Windows for the changes to take effect.

I know there is a program that removed the arrows, but I cannot find it.

Many thanks to you, Laverne. The tip was very useful, but a still better one is found in one of the letters at the end of the program: use TuneUp Utilities 2010. You can download a 30-day trial version. Under the "Customize Windows" header, click on "Appearance of Icons" and uncheck "Show shortcut arrow". Click Apply and restart  your computer. The arrows have gone!
