hopefully not suggesting the obvious, but I have been caught out by this several times:-

Go to Start>Control Panel>Sounds & Audio Devices. The Volume tab will be open - make sure the 'Mute' box is not ticked.
Also clik the Advanced button to bring up the volume controls and make sure nothing is muted on there, or turned way down.

Its also possible you have a second Control Panel applet, put there by your sound card - My Creative Sound Blaster has one called Audio Console, so check the settings in there also. The settings on that will override those on the Sounds & Audio Devices page.

I and my wife had similar problem, no sound. What intitally caused the problem I don't know. I'd updated the sound driver and it said High definition sound, I tried everything that fellow members were telling me with no luck. I then went back into device manager and right clicked, it said something about if after updating you experienced problems, the try 'Rolling Back', this I did and LO there was sound,it was the same with my wives computer, so I did the same and again the sound was back? I don't know if the above will be of any help?
regards

Unless your computer has a Hi Definition Soundcard the installation of the HD update will stop it working.
