How do I upgrade from USB 1.1 to USB 2. Is it  a case of a new Motherboard?

You can buy PCI cards that will upgrade your computer to USB 2.0.
Most of these cards let you plug in multiple USB devices to use the higher speed interface.

I got mine from Eclipse Computers, at Coventry. Their web address is http://www.eclipse-computers.com/  It cost me £3-95 = Vat and p& p.
Their  part number is US-P5-2, it is a 5 port PCI card, with four on the rear and one internal, so that you can connect up to another four in a spare bay on the front.
I would expect that most parts supplier would have a similar card available. There are a number of such mail order stores without paying the inflated prices from PC World and Maplins, if you are prepared to wait delivery time, which is usually pretty good, and can be next day.
