The thing that always fills me with dread is "the page cannot be displayed" or "DNS server error" when you try to open a web page.
This can happen when all seems perfectly OK with the network i.e. You can ping the server...you can ping yourself but cannot access the web. This happened last night with first a wired connection via a Belkin adsl router & later using a wireless connection. Everything seemed to communicate fine but still no webpage.
The reluctant PC was Win98SE & everything else on the network was XP Home SE.
Any suggestions would be v. welcome.......Sorry just correcting some spelling mistakes.

1) Try the "refresh" button on the toolbar.  This fixes some of these right away.
2) go to the address line and back off parts of the address to see if you can get to the site at all.  If you can, then navigate from there to what you are looking for.  If you can, maybe the exact address has been changed.
3) Wait a while -- up to a day -- maybe server is down or traffic temporarily very high.
4) Give up on it.  Might have been erased (happens with controversial sites).

Thanks a bunch for prompt reply.
Sadly all websites give same no go error message....I know, as I've tried 20+.
So far I've tried:
winipcfg (Win 98 version of ipconfig /renew I think).
regsvr32 /i url.mon
reparing IE SP1
re-installing IE SP1
replacing IE with Firefox & Opera.
Re-installing Win 98 SE via setup.exe in Windows Cabs.
Scanning for viruses with AVG 7.1
Scanning for Spyware with Adaware & Spybot Search & Destroy.

See what I mean about being filled with dread at "Page cannot be displayed" message.

I live in hope still though.

I doubt my input will be of much help but anyway, here goes...

That page is not unfamiliar to me...I used to see it too often many years ago...PC was W98SE.

I read your post yesterday...

Today, lo & behold, trying to setup a WXP Pro machine on a network in my office, I saw that dreaded page again!

I don't have an ultimate answer but in my case it was simple to fix for the present time: I unplugged the Ethernet from my 4-port switch and plugged it directly into the router. It worked, instantly!

Something could be wrong with my cabling (ya think?)

I'll post back if/when I resolve this issue.

Thanks a lot for this, Shana.

Yes I had the same experience last year which turned out to be a duff 4 port hub.

Unfortunately in this case the Win98SE is plugged directly into a Belkin 7633-4 Router & is pingable etc.

Just cannot establish an internet connection.

Thanks a lot Jogor.I will certainly try this tip if needed again in the future. In fact I got so frustrated with the problem I formatted & re-installed on the Win98 PC & all is OK now.....So there must have been some Windows corruption there.
Thanks again.
