I recently used Dr. Delete to get rid of all the avg files EXCEPT for 1. avg7core.sys will not delete. When I tried to install the avg8.0 I keep getting an error about cannot delete file. cyclic redundancy check. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem. Is my disk bad or is this a tough file to get rid of? Running xp pro. sp2.

As it's a .sys file it's probably running.

Go to Start/Run and type in msconfig.

When the System Configuration Utility starts
click on the "Startup" tab and you'll see a
list of running services.

Untick the box beside anything to do with
AVG then "Apply".

Might have to reboot to delete the file.

Try asking at the AVG site.
You're probably not the only one
with this problem.

I've had similar things happen with
other progs especially Paint.NET and
another prog that I'd deleted.

I asked the owner of that prog to let
me have the file again so that I could
install it then run the uninstall.

It seems to be a fairly common problem
these days.  Another one which caused
problems was Comodo Firewall which
just stopped working and wouldn't
re-install.

My answer to this is to make regular
backups of partition C: (which only has
Win XP on it) and if things get really
nasty I restore a backup.

Go here http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
and try this prog.  I've used it many times
and it usually works - but not always.

PS msconfig NOT misconfig!!!
