I recently upgraded Adobe Reader from v7 to v8. Now, whenever I attempt to download a pdf file (Win XP SP2 using Firefox v2.0.0.11), I get an error message:

Download Error
C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\locals~1\Temp\10_xp_powertips.pdf could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.

I have checked the file associations in control panel/folder options, and it says that pdf files use ARv8. What has changed, and what can I do to set it straight?

Try going to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and click on the Change button for Adobe Reader.  Then reinstall or repair it.

Thanks Ray,
I tried that (reloading), and it did not seem to make a difference. I also had a huge problem with adobe updater...the world's most poorly written .exe. It starts automatically with AR8, uses most of the CPU time, and I could not end it using Task Mgr or Win Patrol Plus. I could find no place in AR8 to turn it off. The only thing I could do was reboot. Worse, the updater wasn't even in the directory where the Adobe website SAID it was. I switched to Foxit pdf reader...loads very quickly, works great, and most of all its FREE.
Thanks again for all your help - here and in the newsletter.
God Bless Bunches,
Ed

I had problems with the updater too.  It would always say that I needed to update, would go through the process, and then say that it could not update.
I think that I finally uninstalled and removed Adobe and then reinstalled it.  That seems to have worked.
