I have office 2007 Ultimate running on a dual core 2.8 gb with 2gb PC6400, it seems incredibly slow when opening Outlook, Word and any of its applications Has anyone else experienced this, I have Office 2003 running on a slower box, AMD Athlon 2800 with 2GB DDR400 and it leaves Office 2007 in the dust. I've tried playing with services, shutting down app's running in the background ect. If anyone else has had this issue and you found a way to speed it up I'd love to hear about.

I notice that Excel and Word "Running virus scan" (status bar at bottom of screen) when opening a document.  I've found no way to disable it.  Maybe Outlook and other office components do the same. I wonder if it might be the culprit.

I deleted all but a handful of emails from Outlook and that seemed to help.  

I am running in a similar environment, but Office Pro, not ultimate.

Good luck

1. Open Outlook as an Administrator by going to Crograms/Microsoft Office/Office12 and right clicking on the Outlook exe program.  Choose “Run as Administrator”.

2. Then once Outlook opens, go to Tools, then Trust Center, then Addins.

3. Click “Go…” at the bottom and uncheck Outlookaddins.

4. To maximize speed uncheck everything EXCEPT Windows Indexing.

5. Test speed and then add back one at a time checking speed each time.
