Good morning!

I want to use Winrescue XP to rescue an unbootable Windows on a laptop which doesn't have a floppy drive.  I decided that a way to do this would be to boot into BART PE and then run Winrescue from my hard disk.  Will this work?  Will Winrescue know that it's supposed to restore the registry to the dead Windows on my hard disk, and not the registry in BART PE's RAMdisk?

I know that Roy also sells some gadget to use Winrescue with BART PE, but I don't want to spend an extra $15 for something which I can easily do myself, if I can avoid it.

Thanks.
C.

Hmmm.  David wrote me almost the exact same question by email.  Here is the answer I gave him.  I do prefer that questions of me are asked here and not by email.

No, WinRescue will not work with BartPE because it will think that BartPE's registry is the one to restore to.  There is a DOS version of WinRescue XP which comes with WinRescue XP (look in the WinRescue XP directory) that may work, but it does not work seemlessly with BartPE.
Another option is to unzip the registry backup and place the files in the C:\Windows\System32\Config directory (actually the user.ini file in the backup tells where the registry files go, not all of them go in the Config directory), but that is all you have to do to restore the registry.
XP Recovery CD Maker (http://www.xp-recovery-cd.com/) which uses BartPE has a specially written version of WinRescue which works with BartPE.
